reliefs in salvaged old-growth
exhibit opened May 1, 2009

Overview: Fruit of the redwoods is a portfolio comprised of 35 old-growth redwood reliefs. The wood used for this project has been salvaged from stumps left over from logging operations that took place in Mendocino County's coastal forest from the late 1800's to the early 1900's.
All compositions are incised into 2" thick slabs of wood with the surrounding dark portion having been burned and burnished to achieve the dark/light effect. Some of the pieces (such as #11) have what is known as 'curly' wood which looks wavy but is actually smooth to the touch. Click on thumbail for detail page on each piece.
About the Artists: Originally from Japan, Taiji & Masako Arita moved to the Mendocino Coast in 2000 after spending some time in Southern California.
Prior to devoting themselves solely to creating fine art, both had successful careers as artists, he as a painter, photographer, & film maker and she as a fashion designer & stylist.
