Jose Cross

Jose Manuel dos Santos Cross was born in Ilhavo, Portugal in 1927 and came to the US in 1936 living in Alameda, CA on a dairy ranch. He was a merchant marine during WWII and after the war he enrolled in the California College of Arts & Crafts.

In 1957 he began working in sculpture then went on to add collage, assemblage and construction to his list of artistic abilities. In 1958, he started exhibiting his work in the San Francisco Bay Area and Los Angeles.

He is a longtime Mendocino resident, having moved to the area in 1963 and since 1988 his involvment in art has increased progressively. He is currently at work on a suite of 'outragously oversized and useless' furniture made entirely of carved wood.
